Our Estate
Buttershaw Estate in South Bradford is a typical post war Council estate. Built to house the residents who were moved from the slums of central Bradford Buttershaw has seen many changes in recent years. A community association, Royds, received SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) funding and has significantly changed the physical structure of the estate.

Although a great place to live with a strong sense of community the estate faces many of the same problems of similair estates up and down the country.

Poverty is real and exists on Buttershaw. Illiteracy is three times the national average, life expectancy is shorter and general health lower. At points male unemployement has been as high as 47%. The Government's Neighbourhood Statistics show that Buttershaw is one of the most deprived communities in the country.

These summary indicators show the challenges facing Buttershaw;

It is against this background of great people, real poverty and real change that both the Church and the Family Centre work. We have much to be thankful for, not least the work of other organisations on the Estate, but also much still to do.
